AIDA-Child Friendly Dimapur in collaboration with Child Helpline and DCPU Chümoukedima hold Workshop for ASHA Workers on Child Rights & Protection

ANMA Integrated Development Association-Child Friendly Dimapur in collaboration with Child Helpline and DCPU Chümoukedima successfully conducted a workshop for ASHA workers of Chümoukedima on 03 March 2025 at the Primary Health Centre, Chümoukedima. The workshop aimed to educate ASHA workers on children’s rights and educate them on how to effectively identify, address, and intervene in cases of child neglect and abuse. The focused of the workshop was on the theme, “Every Child Matters: Identifying, Preventing, and Responding to Abuse,” inorder to enhance the participants' knowledge and response mechanisms in child protection. The resource person, Mr. Mhaseto Rhakho, Project Coordinator, Child Helpline, Chümoukedima led the sessions, covering key topics such as child abuse and neglect, identifying signs of abuse, and multidisciplinary approaches to child protection. During the session, Mr. Mhaseto shed light on real-life cases of child neglect and abuse encountered in the state, stressing the critical need for early intervention. He informed participants about the various support services available for children and women, including the District Child Protection Unit, Child Helpline, Police Department, and NGOs. He elaborated on the different forms of abuse—physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual—and discussed key indicators to help identify such cases in children. Additionally, he provided helpful tools to recognize child sexual abuse and offered guidance on handling disclosures of abuse sensitively and effectively. For educational purposes, he also allowed a participant to trail call 1098. Urging ASHA workers to take an active role in child protection, Mr. Mhaseto emphasized their responsibility to support and assist any child in distress they encounter, emphasizing the importance of protecting children out of genuine care and concern. Mr. Nikito Zhimomi, District Child Protection Officer, Chümoukedima, attended the workshop and highlighted the responsibilities of the DCPU in implementing child protection policies and programs at the district level under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS). He emphasized that the unit ensures the safety, well-being, and rights of children, particularly those in vulnerable situations. He talked about the DCPU's primary responsibilities during his address, which include: identifying and assisting children in need, working with Juvenile Justice Boards (JJB) and Child Welfare Committees (CWC) to provide care and protection; conducting awareness events about child rights, facilitating foster care, adoption, and alternative care for orphaned and abandoned children; and working with NGOs, law enforcement, Childline, and other stakeholders to strengthen child protection mechanisms. Ms. Shemang, Child Mobilization Officer, AIDA-Child Friendly Dimapur, briefed the participants on ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) interventions across four Northeast states i.e. Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. She also introduced the concept of Child Friendly Dimapur and its vision of building child friendly cities. She emphasized on the importance of child rights and encouraged participants to educate, empower, and collaborate towards creating child friendly spaces in urban and rural communities. The workshop served as a platform to empower ASHA workers with essential knowledge to identify and report child protection concerns effectively, further strengthening community-based child welfare initiatives. A total of 32 ASHA workers and health workers from both Rural and Urban Blocks of Chümoukedima attended the workshop.
